Into The Woods
Starring: Meryl Streep, James Corden, Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, Daniel Huttlestone and Johnny Depp
Director: Rob Marshall
Taking traditional fairytale stories and adding a dark twist. Into The Woods intertwines the story of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Red Riding Hood. The Baker and Baker's wife (James Corden and Emily Blunt) must find four items to dispel of a curse placed on them by the Wicked Witch (Meryl Streep) before it is too late. Throughout their journey they bump into other fairytale characters in which they must retrieve these magical items in order to eradicate a curse put on their family tree. Made by Disney we knew this musical would not be too dark but I appreciate that they did push the boundaries with the relationship between the Wolf (Johnny Depp) and Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford). The transition between speech and singing flows well and all main cast members sang to a good standard, particularly Emily Blunt (Baker's wife), Anna Kendrick (Cinderella) and Daniel Huttlestone (Jack). The movie was slow in places and could have been cut down as it felt a little dragged out. Some songs were unfortunately forgettable as they sounded similar and had the same melody. It would have been great to see other features in the movie such as the ball Cinderella attends and the top of the beanstalk. If you are not a big fan of musicals then I would maybe give this movie a swerve. If you enjoy musicals and are fans of the actors involved then go see it, it will probably not be the best musical movie you have ever viewed.
Favourite Female Performance: Emily Blunt as Baker's Wife
Favoutite Male Performance: Daniel Huttlestone as Jack
Favourite Song(s): Prologue and Your Fault
Positive: Singing and Acting performances from cast members, also has a great prologue
Negative: Felt too long, no view of other sceneries (Ball and Beanstalk)
Overall Rating: 5.5/10
